Thank you for this tutorial. I’ve been putting off learning Photoshop for years now because it’s the one application you can’t just pick up and figure out quickly. This tutorial has given me a lot to learn both in technique and using the program itself. Thanks so much!

Actually, there’s an online tool called ConvertIcon that converts images (pngs are best obviously) to .ico files for you. You can find it at http://www.converticon.com/.

I’m sorry… This is probably really really basic, but how do you actually convert the image to a .ico? I have a picture I want to make into an icon which I edited a little bit, but when I convert it, the resolution gets shot to you-know-where and the end image is ridiculously fuzzy. Maybe this isn’t really the right place to ask for this type of help, but could anyone lend me a hand?
